General Motors employees volunteered the week of September 8th through 12th to make a difference in Southwest Detroit during GM Cares Week. GM and GM Suppliers partnered with the Junction Street Clean Neighborhood project, a community initiative that connects Detroit Cristo Rey High School, Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision, The Ideal Group, and other local businesses to their neighbors from Michigan Avenue to Fort Street.
Local Southwest Detroit schools, businesses and community organizations worked alongside GM volunteer teams to paint twenty out of the twenty-three graffiti sites and cleared fourteen vacant lots. Teams also cleared 1.7 miles of street trash and 3.4 miles of sidewalk trash. A team of GM volunteers also painted a gathering space in a senior center in Southwest Detroit and a classroom in a local school. The Ideal Group and Scarcyny Park & Garden sponsored lunch from area restaurants for volunteers to enjoy.
Southwest Detroit residents are enjoying their clean, walk-able street. Thank you to all teamGM Cares Week volunteers for coming together to reveal the pride and resilience of Southwest Detroit.
