FIRST Robotics build season is in full swing at DHDC’s Robotics Engineering Center of Detroit (RECD). 10 teams representing schools and communities across Detroit are hard at work getting their robots ready for competition.

On February 21st, mentors and guests gathered at the RECD center for the FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff event.

The Competition Kickoff served as an opportunity for RECD students and mentors to display their skills and robots to their team sponsors and supporters. Francois Castaing, Chairman of the FIRST board in Michigan and Tom Stephens, Vice Chairman of the FIRST board in Michigan were special guests for the evening.

“These young people are not just winning in robotics, but are on the road to life success with 56 students going on to college with about $850,000 in scholarships,” remarked Sherita Smith, Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation. “We are grateful for the commitment and ongoing support of our sponsors: General Motors, Ideal Group, the Skillman Foundation, John E. Green Company, Comcast, and Aisin. These generous corporate supporters make this pipeline to STEAM careers possible.”.
