During the week of September 11th, General Motors’ employee volunteers participated in teamGM Cares Week, an annual week-long event that unites GM employees with community residents in making a difference in Southwest Detroit.

Creating productive community spaces, teamGM Cares Week focused on community sustainability, safety, environment, and STEM activities. The week connected lead non-profit partner Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV) and lead corporate partner The Ideal Group with other local businesses and non-profits.

Among their numerous tasks throughout the week, more than 500 volunteers assisted SDEV in maintaining rain gardens that manage stormwater and deter dumping. Volunteers also worked with students in the STEM Classrooms at Holy Redeemer Elementary School and built a fence for an empty lot on Merritt street, increasing safety for neighborhood residents.

“On behalf of Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision and our community partners, we would like to thank teamGM Cares for helping us create and sustain productive community spaces in our Southwest Detroit community,” said Sarah Clark, Director of Programs at SDEV. “The GM Cares Week partnership is truly making amazing, visible changes to increase safety, health, beautification and quality of life in our neighborhoods.”

Communities and nonprofits across the country received a helping hand from General Motors’ employee volunteers.

Thank you to all of our volunteers and sponsors for making our 4th annual teamGM Cares Week a success!
